What Is Pharmacy First?
Pharmacy First is designed to help people with minor illnesses and conditions access professional healthcare support directly from their local pharmacy. Community pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals who can assess symptoms, provide treatment, and issue medication where appropriate.
Conditions Covered Under Pharmacy First
The campaign focuses on seven common conditions that can be treated efficiently by pharmacists:
-
Sinusitis – Infection or inflammation of the sinuses causing congestion and discomfort.
-
Sore throat – Bacterial or viral throat infections that cause pain and difficulty swallowing.
-
Earache (Acute Otitis Media) – Ear infections commonly affecting children and adults.
-
Infected insect bites – Swollen, red, or painful bites that may require treatment.
-
Impetigo – A contagious skin infection causing sores and blisters.
-
Shingles – A viral infection that causes a painful rash.
-
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) in women (ages 16-64) – Common infections causing pain and discomfort when urinating.
How Does It Work?
-
Patients with any of the above conditions can visit a participating pharmacy for a consultation.
-
The pharmacist will assess the symptoms and provide appropriate treatment or advice.
-
If necessary, the pharmacist can supply prescription medication without the need for a GP appointment.
-
If further medical attention is needed, the pharmacist will direct the patient to the appropriate healthcare provider.
